About Us
Joseph Woodworking was founded by Jim Helm in 1990. Jim is a second-generation woodworker with over thirty years experience as a master cabinetmaker. Our company is named after Jim’s father Joe (pictured above), who was also a master cabinetmaker for fifty-five years. Joe worked as foreman for The Dettmers Company, a custom millwork and cabinetry shop. Located in the Gold Coast of Chicago, The Dettmers Company had been serving Chicago and the surrounding areas since the late 1800’s. When Joe retired as foreman of Dettmers, Jim took over, working as foreman during the day and working on his own company after hours. Before Dettmers Company disbanded in 1999, Jim took with him the best cabinetmakers and staff and made Joseph Woodworking a full time operation. In January of 2004 we opened a modern 11,000 square foot manufacturing and finishing facility in Schiller Park, serving the design and construction industries as well as individual homeowners. We make it ourselves, we install it ourselves, and we hold ourselves accountable.
Joseph Woodworking can provide a wide variety of custom architectural millwork, cabinetry, and trim. We have our own in-house finishing facility, and take pride in our ability to achieve excellence in all types of finishing. We can also perform as a specialized general contractor, which enables us to execute projects in limited time frames to meet client requirements. Custom replacement windows and doors meeting historically correct standards are another specialty. Timely completion of all projects is a hallmark of our operation. We pride ourselves on complete customer service using our staff of union cabinetmakers and carpenters, whom average over twenty years of experience. We can also assist in design based upon client preferences and needs.
Our list of completed projects includes kitchens, libraries, bathrooms, entertainment centers, lobbies, paneling and many other unique projects. Joseph Woodworking accepts prints for bids on jobs of any size. A list of trade references and recent work sites is attached, and client references are available upon request.
